Rick Yune, who received his MBA at Wharton School of Business, set up a career working on Wall Street, when suddenly Hollywood came knocking at his door and was chosen to become the first Asian-American to model for Versace and Ralph Lauren’s Polo. That professional progress landed him a starring role in Scott Hicks’ beautiful film Snow Falling On Cedars.
Ed Held: Mr. Yune, tell us a little bit about Universal’s new Kung FU film The Man With The Iron Fists.
Rick Yune: The film was inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill and directed by, co-written, co-composed and co-starring rapper RZA (born Robert Diggs). The film involves RZA, a blacksmith in nineteenth-century Feudal China who makes weapons for a small village under attack by a band of warriors, assassins, and a rogue British soldier. RZA is forced by the radical group to create elaborate tools of destruction. When the clans' brewing war boils over, the stranger channels an ancient energy to transform himself into a human weapon.
EH: I hear that was a task for RZA and he shot over four hours of film. I know it was trimmed to 95 minutes. Will some of that excessive footage be on the DVD?
RY: At first, when Quentin saw the footage, Iron was to be released as two films, that got shot down and now its official, the footage and production will become a trilogy.
EH: Did everybody get along on the shoot in China?
RY: I have a buddy level of commitment to RZA, and we got along with co-stars Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu. We will continue to make film together; it’s a blessing to be able to utilize Cast and Crew members in China, which creates so many good jobs for their film community.
EH: Do you feel lucky to be where you are today?
RY: Life is good, God makes the plans and I just roll with what’s happening.
EH: How hectic was the filming schedule?
RY: We were all committed with stringent work ethics and put in plenty of hours on the set. It was a 6 day schedule usually working days and nights with just one night off.
EH: That must have been rough. Did you spend any free time with Lucy Liu?
RY: We would get together and chow down on egg whites and yams.
EH: Really, must be some kind of fitness diet. Do you eat other things?
RY: Yes, I was recently working in Hollywood South, aka, New Orleans and you have an amazing culture there and the best food and restaurants. The specialty food and the ambiance are just wonderful.
EH: Thank you Mr. Yune for your time. Will you be seen in anything else?
RY: Yes, I star alongside Gerald Butler and Aaron Eckhart in the film Olympus Has Fallen slated for an early 2013 release. _______________############

Director Rupert Wyatt got his start as the co-founder of Picture Farm, the award-winning London & New York based production collective, then went on to study Film in Paris and followed by five years of writing and developing features in New York for companies Shooting Gallery, Miramax and Radical Media. Now under Paramount’s wing, Wyatt re-makes Paramount’s 1974 film The Gambler starring James Caan into a newer production starring Mark Wahlberg. I began asking Rupert what was the desire to make an update? “Frankly, the original film used Caan as a gambler with an addiction, my version is so totally radical, I wanted screenwriter William Monaham to show the notion of what a gambler is. In this case, Mark who was incredible in the part, delivered a complete 180 degree perspective of a gambler who tries his limits and powers controlling choices, like the gambling, living with day-by-day rules, and relationships, to sum it up, Jim is just dissatisfied with life (in general).” I then asked, is that why people perceive his character as careless and without sympathy? “The audience can draw their own conclusions about Jim (Wahlberg), who comes from a wealthy family, is successful as a college professor, and has neuroses about material things in our Western culture. The new script now asks the protagonist where is his Spiritual Wealth? Jim just doesn’t care if he loses it all gambling or the fact he and his family could be shot by loan sharks tomorrow! Jim is on a seven- day path to find freedom from the contrived world he now lives in! It’s the old story, do something or fold-up now! Jim is our anti-hero who gambles to break down the system and make it new again! My final question, Was it difficult as a Director to work with Mark who also is the Producer of the film? “No, Mark was terrific, he show up as the character not the producer.” __________

Summer films in a nutshell – Dunkirk. A smash Grade A, Baby Driver, Wright’s film gets an A-, The Big Sick gets a B+ from Showalter, Atomic Blonde that stars Charlize Theron, is slick and exciting and gets a B rating, and War For The Planet Of The Apes gets a B + which could close the franchise!~~~~~~

One of the most exciting Graphic Novels to hit the 3-D screen is Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets (Europacorp/STXfilms). Valerian, (as beautiful and wondrous as any Special Effects blockbuster can be is, by far, visually delicious) is also filled with epic scenery and creatively directed by Luc Besson, derives its name and its fantastical world from the French comic book series Valérian and Laureline. Created by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières, the comic was first published in 1967 by the legendary house Dargaud. Now a splendid adventure on film, travel with space cops who try to solve Intergalactic Mysteries! Luc Besson, the legendary director of The Professional, The Fifth Element (will now take second place to this spectacle) and Lucy, based his thrilling new space opus on the ground-breaking comic book series which inspired a generation of artists, writers and filmmakers. In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan, perfect for the role and has stunning eye appeal and charisma) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne, a powerful actress with all the right moves) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense (Herbie Hancock), the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha-an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe. Thus, this action adventure called the ‘thousand planets’ refers to all the extraterrestrials that have been linked up with Alpha. It’s an exciting melting pot of creatures, visuals beyond your mind’s eye and a story locked in human affiliates in the west, robots in the east, Gasland creatures in the north, and Aqualand (beautiful but perilous critters) in the south. I loved the look of the film and Valerian is an extravaganza of beauty and imagination, so take a ride into the 28th century with two perfect heroic hotties who dwell into the amazing concept art of Artist Ben Mauro and visual effects supervisor Scott Stokdyk (who won an Oscar for Spider-man 2)! This film will definitely be Nominated for Special Effects, Art Concepts, Make Up and Costumes. Other delights are the Cameo performance of Rihanna, a fabulous Blue shift-changing dancer known as Bubble, the effects and singing will blow your senses to the roof! Valerian is definitely a multidimensional chase adventure unlike anything that’s been on the screen before and the 3-D event of the summer. Can’t wait for a BD 3-D vid when it is released to the home audience public! ****. PG-13. 137 Minutes. ______

Spider-Man: Homecoming (Sony Pictures) is an accurate portrayal and the best Spider-Flick since 2004’s Spider-Man 2, this one finds star Tom Holland justifying the hero’s goodwill as the new Peter Parker/Spider-Man, he’s an enjoyment on the big screen! Directed by Jon Watts, he takes us to the original concept of Spidey and casts an appropriate actor much the age we read about in the comic books. A plus for this move after 6 movies, 3 different lead actors and 2 reboots! The film has already generated $117,015,000 at the Box Office! There is abundant charisma found in this special Spider-Man: Homecoming because it is authenticated by the creator and trademark of Stan Lee, and although Iron Man is involved along with plenty of troubles in the world, (the villain here is Adrian Toomes, aka The Vulture. As Toomes, Michael Keaton’s performance is outstanding as the individual who allowed the big, bad world to decompose his soul) this film seems more realistic because is also centers around Peter’s taxing school days to boot! There are no spider web cover ups in this film or the script! This film is best seen in IMAX 3-D! It is sad our local parish cinema doesn’t support 3-D screenings???????? ***.PG-13. 133 Minutes. _________

Scarlett Johansson is amazing in the mind-blowing and visually gorgeous vision of the future in Ghost In The Shell (Paramount 4K, Blu-Ray 3D BD combo Packs)! Rupert Sanders directs a thrilling eye-popping film that also stars 'Beat' Takeshi Kitano, Michael Carmen Pitt, Pilou Asbaek, and Chin Han. I was stunned at the rich 4K vibrant presentation and also loved the 3-D version that had Scarlett in your face every minute she’s on screen doing her Kung Fu bad ass stunts! In the near future, Major (Scarlett Johansson) is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world’s most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people’s minds and control them, Major is uniquely qualified to stop it. As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major discovers that she has been lied to: her life was not saved, it was stolen. She will stop at nothing to recover her past, find out who did this to her and stop them before they do it to others. Based on the internationally acclaimed Japanese Manga 1995 Animation sensation, “The Ghost in the Shell.” Scarlett Johansson is perfectly cast in the lead role, and carries this movie with all of the torment that she is meant to accomplish and reminds me of another Futuristic Hit Blade Runner and The Fifth Element, only much better. Interesting facts about this gorgeous and suspenseful film is that “The Future Is Now,” as scientist have already come up with what’s known as a brain-computer interface (BCI), a way to wire a brain to an external device to give you direct control of a machine, such as a prosthetic arm, using only your thoughts! Also amazing is that your brain can be on the Internet according to Researchers at Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE), the company that served as advisers on the film! Fortunately you can all see this technology now with “Ghost,” and not have to wait to see this in the future! Bonus: Hard-Wired Humanity: Making GITS. Section 9: Cyber Defenders and Man & Machine: The Ghost Philosophy! Yes, this belongs in your 3-D library because of the film’s atmosphere, effects, music and aesthetics are beautifully meshed together. ________

Listen up, fight back for what is yours when you observe the hit Unforgettable (Warner Bros. Blu-Ray + DVD + Digital). Katherine Heigl stars as Tessa Connover, who is barely coping with the end of her marriage when her ex-husband, David (Geoff Stults), becomes happily engaged to Julia Banks ( Rosario Dawson)-not only bringing Julia into the home they once shared but also into the life of their daughter, Lilly (Isabella Rice). Trying to settle into her new role as a wife and a stepmother, Julia believes she has finally met the man of her dreams, the man who can help her put her own troubled past behind her. My advice- never meet a stranger online because you just might get hooked up with Satan in Devil’s Domain (MVD Visual Entertainment Group Blu-ray). Following an acclaimed international festival run, LA VIE DE JEAN MARIE debuts on DVD (IndiePix Unlimited), the company's signature streaming service found on Amazon channels or at For six years, Van Houten followed his subject, patiently capturing the unique and jovial pastor/farmer as he tended to his daily duties. The eldest son of a large Dutch family who purchased a mountain in the Pyrenees in 1948, the seventy-something Jean-Marie - probably the last of the area parish priests -- holds forth with such a disarming honesty and spontaneity, audiences can't help falling for him. The pastor speaks of the rejection by the great love of his life which turned him to the cloth, though he still fantasizes about love. Yet, at the age of 75, he makes a radical decision that leaves everyone baffled. Van Houten has shed light on a kind of unsung hero of his community. Also as a bonus is the film’s spectacular photography of the Pyrenees. The unrated DVD is in French, with English subtitles. _______
